Have you ever wanted to get in the brain of a designer? Well, here's your chance! I'm the designer. Lily Coleman. Some say I'm too modest and some say I'm too bold. Well I'm here to candidly share with you....my "Modestly Bold" brain.
THE BEGINNING.
I've been softly encouraged to start a blog by my fiancé. He has been with me every day since I started my business Halland Design, LLC. He has seen all the ups and downs that go along with a designer starting their own business, and thought it could help others if I shared my experiences! So that's what I am doing.
This blog is intended to encourage, inspire and motivate other creative, business, open minded people that want to succeed as much as I do. This is to share with you my journey so far and the adventure to come. And hopefully help, so that you know you are not alone and what you are going through in starting or running your own business is totally NORMAL. The normalcy of the tears, excitement, tearing your hair out, wanting to quit, thinking you have made it, then getting knocked down, then getting back up, then getting knocked down kind of normal...well at least it's normal in my brain. After all, normalcy is in the eye of the beholder right? I mean, I look normal, don't I?
So, I'm going to start from the beginning.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME.
I started Halland Design, LLC back in 2015. After A LOT of back and forth, weighing out the options, making a business plan, planning out numbers...who am I kidding...other than the the back and forth in my brain, I had NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING, I left my senior motion graphics designer position that I had been in for 12 years at a local cinema advertising company.
I can't say I literally jumped in to owning my own business because that would be using literally wrong :) but figuratively speaking, I jumped into owning my own business. I thought, that when I opened up the "doors," the clients would be flooding in. After all, I had been a designer for 13 years at that point! How hard could it be? Well, through a very humbling, challenging and enlightening, almost 6 years, that's not quite how it has happened. But what I will say, is that 90% of businesses fail within the first 5 years, and I AM STILL GOING STRONG!
So from here on out I will be sharing what's on my brain! And in return, I want to hear about what is on yours. How can we be magnificent business owners together? How can we encourage, inspire and motivate one another? I will tell you how. By being transparent and communicating. Knowing that we are all going through similar business situations, really helps our mental state. Think of it as your brainstorming outlet.
